Some cars support a "keyless entry" feature that allows you to access your car simply by carrying your phone (Social Media)

In March, Apple introduced an advanced feature allowing users to add their car keys to the Apple Wallet on both iPhone and Apple Watch, according to Apple’s official website. Once the virtual key is added, users can lock, unlock, and even start their cars through the Wallet app. However, there are a few requirements:

1. Compatible iPhone and Apple Watch Models:

  • iPhone: iPhone XS and later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) with the latest iOS version.
  • Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 5 and later or Apple Watch SE with the latest watchOS version.

2. Apple ID Login

  •    Ensure you’re signed in with your Apple ID on your device.

3. Supported Car Models

Currently, Apple supports certain car models only, including:

  • BMW
  • BYD
  • Chevrolet
  • Genesis
  • Hyundai
  • KIA
  • Lotus
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Rivian

To check if your car model supports Apple Car Key, visit your car manufacturer’s website.

How to Add Your Car Key to Your iPhone

  1. Open the car manufacturer’s app on your iPhone and link your car.
  2. Follow the instructions in the app to locate the digital key (instructions vary by manufacturer).
  3. The app will prompt you to add the car key to your Apple Wallet. Tap "Continue" and place your device on the key reader to pair it with your car.

Once added, the car key will also be accessible on a paired Apple Watch, or you may add it manually by navigating to the Watch app on your iPhone, selecting Wallet & Apple Pay, and tapping "Add" next to the car key.

Using the Digital Car Key

The functionality of the digital car key depends on your car model. Some cars allow remote locking/unlocking, while others support "Express Mode," letting you use the digital key without unlocking your device. Additionally, cars with “Keyless Entry” allow you to simply approach to unlock and walk away to lock automatically.

One of the key’s standout features is the ability to share it with family or friends via text or, in some cases, even through WhatsApp.

If your iPhone is lost or stolen, you can mark your device as lost, which will prevent others from using the digital car key while still allowing shared users to access their keys.
