Over 25 organizations are set to urge major social media platforms to implement concrete measures to protect women from AI misuse, according to a draft letter seen by AFP.

In this letter addressed to leaders at Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), as well as platforms like X, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, and Reddit, the organizations are calling for improvements in detecting sexist and misogynistic content on their platforms.

This appeal arises amid a sharp increase in disinformation and "deepfake pornography" in recent years, where AI is used to create fabricated sexual images or videos. Women account for roughly 90% of the victims of such content, which is often produced without their knowledge, the organizations reported.

The groups emphasized that women are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of AI-generated content. Leanna Garfield from GLAAD stated that social networks must take immediate action to make the online space safe for everyone.

The letter includes several recommendations, such as banning repeat offenders from social networks, employing external tools to monitor AI-generated content, and conducting internal audits to assess the efficacy of measures taken against harmful content.
