Get to Know Hypatia: A Free Antivirus Tool for Android

Some Android users may notice symptoms indicating their devices are infected with viruses or malicious code, such as discovering unknown apps, the device overheating, drastically reduced battery life, or the sudden appearance of pop-up ads. In extreme cases, the device may completely stop functioning.

A report from the German Press Agency recommends that users in such situations scan their Android devices using antivirus programs like Hypatia, a free, open-source tool. It relies on open-source signatures, specifically from the ClamAV antivirus database.

No Internet Connection Required

Hypatia operates entirely offline, meaning no data is left on the device, and the internet is only used to download the virus signatures from ClamAV.

If potential viruses are detected, users can consult VirusTotal, a service that checks suspicious results against around 70 different antivirus programs. This ensures users are protected from harmful code and helps reduce the chance of false positives.

Fast and Efficient

Hypatia works swiftly without negatively impacting battery consumption. Since real-time scanning is disabled by default after installation, battery life remains unaffected.

Users can easily start manual scans by clicking the small green play triangle icon in the top right corner. Additionally, a three-dot icon in the same location provides access to settings.

Important Settings for Effective Scans

Before running a scan, users should verify that the system files, installed apps, and external memory (if an SD card is inserted) are selected for scanning in the settings.

Hypatia is available exclusively on F-Droid, an alternative store for free Android apps.
