AI-generated images have become increasingly common, and sometimes it’s challenging to distinguish between real photos and those created by AI. Google Photos aims to address this issue.
According to a recent report by Android Authority, there are indications that Google Photos will soon offer a feature allowing users to view details about an image’s origin, specifically identifying whether it was AI-generated. This upcoming functionality would be helpful whether the images were received from others or created personally, enabling Google Photos to label them as AI-generated to help users differentiate between authentic and AI-crafted visuals. Additionally, the app will provide information on whether AI-based editing tools were used on a photo.
As explained in the report, Google Photos will integrate a feature capable of displaying image details that reveal AI involvement. For instance, if an image was generated using Google’s Gemini AI model, the app would label it as "Created with Google AI." Users could also access the photo's EXIF data for more detailed information.
Similarly, if a photo has been edited using Google Photos' AI features, it will carry a label such as "AI-created using Google Photos" or "AI-created using Google."
While it’s too early to know exactly when this detection system will be implemented, this step reflects Google’s commitment to transparency. It will help users quickly identify if an image was AI-generated or edited, promoting a clearer understanding of digital content authenticity.
